Red Alert

Funny how things turn out sometimes. Yesterday, I got a flat tyre on the way to school. I had to kill an hour in town whilst waiting for a lift home: cue blissful time in the local bookshop, followed by a coffee and browse in my very favourite clothes shop, leaving in a pair of age-inappropriate wedge trainers. Bored with flats, clearly. In other news, Red Magazine's Hot Women Awards 2012 shortlist was announced yesterday and I'm on it, in the Blogger category. I am stunned, thrilled and really grateful for the nomination. I'll keep you posted. Until then, I'll stick to what I know. Namely, wine.

Current white in the fridge: Sainsbury's Taste The Difference Gruner Veltliner 2011, £6.99, Sainsbury's
Think I might have done this one before, some time ago. Back for more. This part-floral, part-spicy, part-peachy white is refreshingly different. For a start, it is from Austria. Actually, it is from Sainsbury's, but you know what I mean. Makes a nice change. Good Austrian wines can be fantastic, but they are few and far between here. Be prepared to forage. Then there's the flavour: ripe, bright, and with enough vim & vigour to make even a simple soup supper feel more special.

Current red in the rack: Casillero del Diablo Carmenere 2010, £7.99, Tesco
Must be having a not-usual-suspects week this week when it comes to grapes. First, Gruner Veltliner and now this one, a Carmenere from one of the most reliable producers in Chile. Originally from Bordeaux, the grape has made itself quite at home in Chile too, producing a ripe, spicy red loaded with bramble fruit and somewhere in there, a whiff of coffee. This wine is the vinous equivalent of a slanket: warm, enveloping and best enjoyed on the sofa. You have been warned.
